It's a valid question and one that I've been asked more than a few times as I start this new career path.
The statistics show that people working with health coaches have more success in weight loss and lifestyle changes than those that try to do it alone. But these results only tell half the story. Health coaching is not only about the tangible outcomes, but also about the path each individual takes to get there.
As a health coach, I want all of my clients to succeed in reaching their goals. But instead of handing out quick fixes like detox drinks and unrealistic workout plans, I teach useful strategies and important psychology behind health and behavior change.
After all, most of us know healthy foods versus unhealthy foods. Should I have this apple or a bag of chips? Did you choose the apple? Good, you proved my point.
Even though we are often able to distinguish healthy choices from unhealthy ones, that doesn't mean we always make the healthier choice. Through health coaching I am able to review the basics of nutrition and exercise for those that want to learn, but for the most part I focus on the tools needed to actually start executing better behaviors. Learning why we crave certain foods and what dictates our eating habits is far more useful than studying how many grams of carbs, fats, and proteins you need each day.
Here's the truth. If you are someone who has tried to make healthy changes in the past, chances are you already know a lot about nutrition and physical fitness. However, all that knowledge still isn't preventing you from ordering pizza or skipping the gym.
That's what I am here to answer. While coaching clients, I am able to discover the true roadblocks between the individual and their success. It's different for everyone, which is why an individualized coaching plan is so critical. I help people change their lives at the source of the issue rather than offering a temporary solution.
My health coaching program is about sustainable change and growth toward an overall healthier life. I work closely with each client individually to get to know exactly what their struggles and successes have been in past and I leverage health psychology and motivational techniques to facilitate lasting change.
